Nicki Minaj was born on 8 December 1982, in St James on the islands of Trinidad and Tabago. Her name at birth was Onika Tanya Maraj. She is the daughter of Carol and Robert Maraj. Nicki moved to the United States in order to pursue her musical career, and she has been recording songs since 2007.

When she moved to the United States Minaj settled in the Queens district of New York. In terms of musical styles her music is generally described as been hip hop and rap. Minaj writes her own songs and many in the music business believe she is the fastest female rapper.

Between 2007 and 2009 Nicki Minaj put out three mixtapes to draw attention to her music. The people at Young Money Entertainment liked what they heard and gave her a record deal. She quickly recorded her debut album Pink Friday, which eventually reached the number one spot after been released during 2010. It gave Minaj a number three hit single in the shape of Super Bass as well. At one point she had seven singles in the chart all at the same time, a first for a female artist.

Her second album Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded made her even more successful, with the infectiously catchy single Starships in 2012. Two years later she released her third album Pinkprint featuring the smash hit Anaconda.

Minaj was also a guest judge on a season of American Idol and has already appeared in a couple of films.
